Expressing Cause and Effect







cause is something that makes something else happen. Out of two events, it is the event that happens first. To determine the cause, ask the question "Why Did it Happen?" 

An effect is what happens as a result of the cause. Of two related events, it’s the one that happens second or last. To determine the effect, ask the question "What Happened?" 


CAUSE 

               EFFECT
- The boy kicked the ball.               - The ball rolled.
- The girl teased the cat.           - The cat growled.
- Sally studied hard for a test.          - Sally earned an A on her test.
- Joe became really tired.
          - Joe went to sleep early.

Expressing Cause

- The reason for why …(ing)/ of 
- …….is caused by/ due to ………. 
- …....because …………………… 
- …since…./ since……………… 
- Than las to……………………. 

Expressing effect
- The result/ effect/ 
- Consequence of….is……….… 
- ………Because of this………. 
- ………Consequently ……….. 
- ………As a result……………. 
- ………as a consequence…… 
- …....... So…………………..… 
- There fore ……………………. 


Examples: 
- The cause of the accident is the high speed. 
- the reason for my coming late is that 
I missed the bus. 
- The reason for his success is his hard work. 
- Accidents are usually caused by…. 
- The flight has been put off due to the bad weather. 
- The effect of dropping out from school is the increases in illiteracy. 
- It was raining; there fore we stayed at home.


■ 
When we talk about an effect resulting from a certain cause, we use expressions such as: because, since, as, owing to, due to...

● Examples
- The police arrested him because he broke into a bank.
- The police arrested him since he broke into a bank.
- She can't read the letter as she is illiterate.
- He can't run fast for he is too fat.
- Owing to his intelligence, he managed to solve the problem.
- Due to the bad weather, they didn't go for a picnic.
